Personal Style Journey: Kimberly

My name is Kimberly Seibel. I’m a born and raised Calgarian and for the past 14 years I’ve been growing in my career as a Hairstylist currently at Hedkandi Salon. My job as a Hairstylist is to create beautiful hair that compliments and enhances the personal style of each individual that sits in my chair.

For as long as I can remember I’ve loved dressing up; I enjoy the whole process of curating a look from beginning to end. That aspect of style has always come easily to me, however putting together an outfit that actually spoke to me has had it's growing pains.

Working in a hair salon half of my life I’ve been exposed to a wide variety of styles. I’ll never forget the day I was hired, my mentor said to me “I don’t care what your style is but whatever it is... I want you to fully embrace it. If you’re punk, be punk; if you’re preppy, be preppy”. Those words became my mantra to personal style and from that day forward I really began my own exploration to find my style.

Being in an environment that allows you the freedom to dress for whoever you are means endless possibilities. In my early years at the salon I found myself a bit lost trying to figure out what that looked like for me. I found inspiration in my colleagues style and would try them out for myself, often layering different looks. I think back on some of the outfits I wore and it makes me cringe. But in truth, it was those years of discovery that really allowed me to play and have fun with fashion. It was through that process of playing with looks and experimentation that I started to hone in on a style that I identify with and feel is my own.

Travelling has also had a huge role in developing my personal style. It’s exposed me to beautiful textiles, unique shapes, and different forms to tailoring - it’s something I’ve had a lot of fun playing around with. I also love to incorporate looks from past eras and the different sub cultures that existed during those times. Exploring this side of style has made me appreciate how important tailored clothing is and how well made, classic pieces are an essential part of any wardrobe.

I think with this new world of online communities and greater connectivity we are so lucky to be able to pull on a seemingly endless source of inspiration and new ideas to help develop our own sense of fashion. I feel like I can’t really sum up my style into one look or influence, and that’s the fun part! It’s always created in a moment, influenced by my mood and informed by the style and design I’ve loved throughout my life. That’s what makes it so captivating and interesting to me - fashion can give you a sense of a person and tell their story. But with that said, I’m human and not every morning goes to plan, so when in doubt... you can never go wrong with a good pair of jeans and a well fitted white t-shirt!
